Project SAICM 2.0
The hazard analysis compares the health and environmental hazards of disinfectants. It was developed as part of the SAICM 2.0 project to support procurement managers and hygiene teams in substituting or choosing alternatives.
In a first step, the substitution requirement of a currently used disinfectant is estimated. A need for substitution is assumed if the disinfectant contains ingredients with significant and/or long-term negative effects on human health and/or the aquatic environment. In order to determine such an effect, the ingredients are categorized (ABC categorization). The hazard analysis can be applied to hand and skin disinfectants, surface disinfectants, instrument disinfectants and laundry disinfectants. For a comprehensive analysis, a list of ingredients classified as hazardous is required, as well as additional information on the concentration, method of application, spectrum of activity and consumption quantities of the product and the possible alternatives. A need for substitution is assumed if a product contains category A substances. In this case, subsequent benchmarking is recommended. Benchmarking means comparing it to an assumed “better” or “best” product. The aim is to identify alternatives. The WIDES database supports the analysis by offering relevant substance classifications and offering product alternatives.
