The rodenticide study carried out by the Technisches Büro Klade on behalf of the Vienna Ombuds Office for Environmental Protection was published in August 2025. It evaluates the hazard potential of the rodenticide active ingredients used in Austria and shows ways to reduce their entry into the environment. Second-generation anticoagulants are particularly problematic: they are highly effective, but at the same time persistent, bioaccumulating and associated with considerable risks for non-target animals. The study therefore recommends that these active ingredients should only be used if there is a high level of infestation or proven resistance. Furthermore, the research shows that sustainable rat control requires comprehensive management. Infestation monitoring, clear responsibilities and waste and wastewater management measures can significantly reduce the use of environmentally harmful rodenticides. The study thus makes a technical contribution to the further development of rat management in Vienna.
