The WIDES database was incorporated into Austrian Ecolabel Guideline UZ 301, “Schools and Teacher Training Colleges”. The version adopted in June 2022 contains binding requirements for the careful and responsible use of disinfectants under “Chemical Products and Cleaning”. Mandatory criterion C02 requires routine disinfection to be avoided and disinfectants to be used only where legally required or temporarily necessary. For necessary surface disinfection, products from the WIDES database that contain no red-coded ingredients are among those recommended. Fragrance-free alcohol-based products should be used for hand disinfection, preferably products that WIDES identifies as suitable for hand disinfection by pregnant workers. Inclusion in the guideline underlines the practical importance of WIDES as a decision-support tool for selecting disinfectants with due regard to health and the environment.
