The study also developed strategies for effective rat control with the lowest possible environmental impact.

The most commonly used rodenticides contain anticoagulants called anticoagulants. In particular, second generation anticoagulants (Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides, SGAR) are often used due to their high effectiveness and comparative ease of use. Their delayed effect prevents rats from recognizing an immediate connection between ingestion of the bait and the poisoning effect.

However, SGARs have particularly problematic environmental and health properties. They are persistent, can accumulate in organisms and are classified as toxic to reproduction. In addition, they can also harm animals that are not intended to be controlled. These non-target animals ingest rodenticides either directly through bait or indirectly through consumption of poisoned rodents. Studies have detected rodenticide residues in birds of prey, owls, foxes and other wild animals, among others.

The comparative assessment shows that there are currently only a few approved chemical alternatives to anticoagulant rodenticides. Their targeted use may therefore be necessary in certain situations. However, through preventive and accompanying measures as well as well-organized rat management, the amount, frequency and duration of use can be significantly reduced.

Sustainable rat management should particularly include the following elements:

a central coordination point with sufficient professional and technical resources,

continuous monitoring of the infestation dynamics,

the documentation of infestation sites and control measures,

Measures in waste and sewerage management,

the elimination of food sources and shelter options,

structural and organizational prevention measures,

the targeted use of chemical control agents and

the testing of non-chemical processes, in particular suitable trap systems.

Sustainable rat control is therefore not limited to the use of rodenticides. What is crucial is an integrated approach that combines prevention, infestation monitoring and targeted control measures. This means that the use of particularly problematic active ingredients can be significantly reduced without compromising the goal of effective rat control.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″
