It was developed and tested in practice for food, but can in principle also be used for other types of products.

The Technisches Büro Klade developed the method together with scientific partners. The aim was to record the origin of a product as completely as possible – from the raw materials used, intermediate products and processing steps to the finished packaged product.

The methodological model is the life cycle assessment or the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). A life cycle assessment examines the life cycle of a product in order to record its potential environmental impact. For this purpose, the product examined, the limits of the system under consideration and the requirements for the quality of the data used are clearly defined.

The Life-Cycle-oriented Origin Analysis (LCOA) adopts essential methodological principles of the life cycle assessment, but pursues a different goal: instead of the environmental impact, it calculates the geographical origin of the components and value added shares of a product. This calculation is carried out in the “Origin Analysis” module.

Information about origin often only refers to individual raw materials or the final processing step. However, it is not always possible to determine from this what proportion of a product actually comes from a particular region. The Life-Cycle-oriented Origin Analysis (LCOA) therefore looks at the entire value chain.

Compared with simple origin claims and regional labels, the method offers several advantages. It

can basically be applied to different types of products,

covers the entire value chain,

takes into account raw materials, intermediate products, processing and packaging,

reports regional and supra-regional product shares separately,

makes parts with unknown or insufficiently documented origins visible and

clearly defines system limits and requirements for the data used.

The geographical reference areas can be chosen according to the respective question. For example, shares from a municipality, a region, a federal state, Austria, the European Union or other areas of origin can be shown separately.

The calculation can be based on different reference values. Depending on the objective, the mass flows used, the respective prices or costs or a combination of these variables can be used.

A mass-related calculation shows where the material components of a product come from. A value-related view can also make it clear what proportion of the added value arises in a specific region.

The Life-Cycle-oriented Origin Analysis (LCOA) enables the following comparisons in particular:

Comparison of the geographical origin of different products from the same product group,

Comparison of regional and supra-regional product or value added shares,

Comparison of the actual product origin with the origin information of a product,

Comparison of the calculated origin with the expectations of consumers.

The Life-Cycle-oriented Origin Analysis (LCOA) thus creates a comprehensible and data-based basis for statements of origin. It can support companies, public procurement authorities and other organisations in recording the geographical origin of products in a differentiated manner and in transparently presenting regional value creation.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″ text_align=”right” mobile_text_align=”left”]
Download & Links
[/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text el_class=”download”]PDF: Klade M, Seebacher U, Baumgartner Rupert J.
