The aim of the study was to assess the risks of the active ingredients used to human health and the environment and to derive recommendations for operation, procurement and risk minimisation.

In open circuit cooling systems, biocides are used to prevent or at least limit the formation of biofilms and the proliferation of pathogenic microorganisms – especially Legionella. In addition, chemicals are often added to the cooling water to reduce deposits and corrosion.

Legionella prefer to multiply at water temperatures between 25 °C and 45 °C and find favorable growth conditions in biofilms. In open cooling systems, they can be released as aerosols and inhaled by people in the area. Documented outbreaks of disease, some of which were fatal, illustrate the importance of professional maintenance and operational management.

The study does not evaluate the effectiveness of the biocides examined against Legionella. This is required for the approved applications. Rather, the focus is on the hazardous properties of the active ingredients, their environmental behaviour and the burdens associated with their use.

The following questions were examined in particular:

What risks can the biocides used pose to human health and the aquatic environment?

How important are the application conditions and the entry of the active ingredients into the wastewater?

Which active ingredients and processes can be classified as comparatively favorable when considering the hazard potential, maintenance effort and operational requirements?

What technical and organizational measures can be used to reduce the use of problematic biocides?

The results show that, in addition to the selection of suitable active ingredients, the structural and technical condition, regular maintenance and professional management of the systems are crucial. By correcting technical deficiencies and effective system management, the need for biocides and other wastewater-related chemicals can be significantly reduced.

Among the biocidal processes, oxidizing processes with the lowest possible formation of adsorbable organically bound halogens (AOX) appear to be comparatively advantageous. These include the on-site generation of active chlorine by electrolysis of a sodium chloride solution and the use of chlorine dioxide that is as pure as possible.

Processes based on hydrogen peroxide, monochloramine or ozone can also fundamentally represent suitable alternatives. However, there is currently only limited practical experience in Austria for some of these procedures.

With appropriate maintenance and operational management, the use of wastewater-relevant biocides and environmentally hazardous corrosion inhibitors can be reduced or avoided under certain conditions. The study advises against the use of the active ingredients CMIT/MIT, DBNPA and glutaraldehyde, particularly due to their hazardous properties and for employee and environmental protection reasons.

The following active ingredients, active ingredient groups and processes were examined in detail:

Monochloramine

Chlorine dioxide

Active chlorine

Active bromine

BCDMH (bromochlorohydantoin)

DBNPA (2,2-dibromo-2-cyanacetamide)

Bronopol (2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol)

CMIT/MIT

Hydrogen peroxide, including combinations with silver

ozone

Peracetic acid

Benzalkonium chlorides and other quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs)

Glutaraldehyde

other biocidal active ingredients and processes, including THPS and peroxomonosulfate

The study combines the evaluation of the material properties with the operational conditions of the application. It thus offers a technical basis for selecting the lowest-risk processes possible and for the precautionary use of biocides in evaporative cooling systems.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″
